My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I thought the voice of the first 1/3 was really young and at the same time, the topic is right on cue for a teen audience. I’ve had lots of students in the experience of being taken into care in this age group and it is a challenge because they’re often going through a new culturing to understand what they’ve lived without, as Eva has. It all ties up very nicely at the end — which may be a fiction that we don’t want to sell but at the same time it offers hope that families can mend. However it has sad moments and warm moments, and Eva’s poetry is really nice — improving in quality throughout. A very strong debut from Wanda John-Kehewin in this genre.
